Can an Accountant help with Fashion Branding?

A Google image search for 'accountant fashion' returns pages of men in polyester suits and questionable ties.  So why would you talk to your accountant about branding your fashion business?

While we might not be the most fashion conscious experts, we do know a thing or 2 about brand development.

We understand that branding is not just a nice logo or a set of personalised pens. It's the whole experience people have of your business no matter where they are in the buying cycle.

Getting your branding right can mean the difference between being a good business and an excellent one.

So here are some questions to consider when developing your brand.

What do you want to be known for?

What can you be best at? This doesn't have to be something grand and noble such as world peace or eradicating poverty, but it needs to be specific. It could be something as simple as producing handbags that are only made in the UK.

This information will form the mission statement of your business and guide everything that you do.

What do you stand for?

What do you care about the most and how do these values affect you running your business? This could cover:

·         the companies you work with

·         how you treat your employees

·         the equipment and materials you use.

How do you communicate this?

You know that old philosophical question, 'If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?' It applies to business too.

You might run the most extraordinary company but if you don't let people know about it your success will be limited.

The trick here is to show, rather than tell. How you showcase your business will depend but could include:

·         putting effort into doing work you are proud of

·         entering awards

·         networking with your peers

·         getting involved in your community

·         collecting case studies

·         setting up social media channels.

Who is your ideal client?

Who do you want to work with and, just as importantly, which clients just don’t fit your brand?

You could put some personas together of the kind of people you can help and what they need from you.
